An open letter to Joe Quesada, he who killed Spiderman
An open letter to Joe Quesada, Editor in Chief at Marvel comics and apparently the brain child behind the recent destruction of one of the most beloved Marvel characters of all time; Spiderman.
Dear Mr. Quesada,
With all due respect to you in your achievement in becoming Editor in Chief, I must say, you have destroyed - utterly and wholly - a favorite character of mine and of countless others. What you have done with Spiderman: One More Day & A Brand New Day is shameful and unforgivable.
The Marvel Universe has had its share of horrible story lines. Cable & Bishop, anyone? It has seen countless reboots and re-imagined stories. It has seen shifting time lines and often poorly-handled "freshening" of character back stories. But never have I seen such ridiculous changes as we now are forced to endure in Spiderman.
Is it not bad enough that we need to follow three...? four...? different titles in order to get the whole Spidey story? Is it not bad enough that so many stupid and extraneous, often confusing and ultimately empty story arcs have been forced upon us (Ben Parker...?)? And now you want to go and destroy this character and throw him back to his own private stone age? Having May and MJ being part of the whole Spiderman world was a good thing. It gave the characters, Spiderman *and* Peter Parker, a certain real-world anchor of credibility. Spiderman, the title, has always been about Peter Parker more than it could ever be about the costume, and expanding Peter's life to include those closest to him was a wonderful thing.
You have taken away some of that which made him a favorite. You have unwound two decades of story telling. You have rebooted Spiderman, but in a most foolish and silly way.
Nice job. I can only hope that at some point in the very near future, Peter wakes to learn that this has all been a horrible dream and you, sir, are left without gainful employment in the entertainment industry. You putz.
So, Mr. Quesada, I say only this...

It's "Spider-man"!!! I haven't even read the comics yet and I want to cry. Oh well, I guess we will get another re-boot after the re-boot...
That picture of the kid is funny I always thought it was a Red Sox fan, I like it better knowing it is a soccer fan.
Explain to us non-comic book geeks (no offense, only ribbing intended), or otherwise stated, fringe comic book hero fans, what exactly happened to Spiderman?
Did he actually kill Spidey? Or did he change his circumstances, which you interpret to kill Spidey...
Inquiring minds want to know.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Two of the great "letting out a held breath and saying 'FINALLY'" things happened over the last 20 years; Aunt May learns that Peter is Spiderman and Peter and MJ get married (MJ of course finds out about Peter/Spiderman just before that).
They're unwinding the whole MJ's knowledge of Peter->Spiderman and the marriage, due to a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May from an injury that came about as a result of Peter's coming out as Spidey publicly in the Civil War story.
This has very deep implications beyond just the Spiderman title(s), and it seems that they've shoved the story all the way back to when Harry Osbourne and Peter were friends.
Complete. Ass.
Yeah, it is total, total, total crap. Worst thing Marvel has done since they showed us that Franklin Richards is some kind of god with "Heroes Reborn," probably.
From the perspective of a writer, this kind of complete disregard for character development and continuity is extremely, extremely dishonest, in addition to being off-putting. Why should I ever believe anything that happens to character in the future is going to matter? Fortunately for Marvel, "Spider-Man" is too ingrained in the culture to be totally killed by this.
>> Franklin Richards is some kind of god with "Heroes Reborn,"
Wow, I had forgotten that. Just as I hope to forget this mess (after YArB - yet another reboot) is corrected.
I don't often wish badness on people, and it's not like I *really* want to see Joe-Q dead, but I do honestly feel like some kind of negative feedback has to hit him right in his career and his wallet after this.
I agree - I think (hope...?) the marketplace will speak up and this mess will go away. Somehow. I'll even accept the "hey, look, it was all a bad dream" this one time.
And the "Sins Past" arc??? death to Quesada!!! Gwen Stacy 4ever!!!
